Donna Karan in Haiti

I still have to blog about our recent camping trip with the Boy Scouts - but this was posted on Facebook tonight and I simply had to share.

Donna Karan from DKNY has gotten involved with ApParent Project in Haiti.  As I sat and watched it, I wept.  It's so awesome to have a tiny part in this organization.  I am honored to promote this ministry and these people. I hope those of you who have donated cereal boxes, and purchased their jewelry feel the same way. We are helping to make a difference!  I thank God for helping me to see beyond my little circle.

Puppet Fever

For those of you who may not know, my brother is a puppeteer.  He builds puppets and he performs.  Never is he more in his element than when a puppet is on his arm or when he's elbow deep in foam and glue.  He always amazes me when he is behind the stage and his 6 year old friend, Riki comes out to talk to everyone.  It only takes a few seconds and you believe that this cute little guy made of foam and material is real. It makes me proud.

Riki
Marc has been all over the country and to England doing what he loves.  And he's good at it.  This weekend, I got to watch his talent in action again and it was so much fun!

Marc and Sam hosted a One Way Street Puppet Festival at their church.  Over 180 people were there to learn, perform and compete in all things puppets!  If you have never been to one of these festivals, they are quite interesting.  Lot's of people all together, playing with puppets, talking in strange voices, walking around with their arms over their heads.  But you can't be their long before you catch it.  "Puppet Fever"!  The creativity in a room like this is crazy!  And you get to watch several different puppet teams from all over the region compete with songs and ideas that they are using in ministry.  It's so much fun!

Marc asked me to join him this past weekend and help at the festival.  I was honored.  I have been to several, I have taken my own team and competed, and I've even been one of the workshop teachers.  But this time, I got to work behind the scenes.  It was a lot of fun.  I did catch that "Puppet Fever" again.  I miss directing. Maybe one day the Lord will give me another team. But for now, I simply enjoyed watching Marc in his element.

My Thoughts on Osama

Typically I keep my blog to current events in the Franklin house.  Even more specifically, current events concerning me and my heart and what God is doing in my life.  Today, the current world events and my current heart events have collided. With the recent death of Osama bin Laden, my spirit has been uneasy.  I think it's all the celebrating that bothers me.

Was he evil?  Yes.  Did he murder thousands of innocent people?  Yes.  Do I feel a sense of relief now that he in out of the picture?  Yes.  But - was he a man that was created by God like me?  Yes.  Is God rejoicing over the fact that he is in hell?  I don't think so.  Regardless of the type of man bin Laden was - he had a soul.  He was loved by God.  This blog summed everything up so well for me this morning:

by Jud Kossum

Osama bin Laden is dead. That’s the big news this morning.

I believe justice has been done. I believe he deserved what he got. I believe this creates closure for a lot of people whose loved ones were murdered by this man.

I also believe that this is not something to celebrate. As a friend of mine pointed out this morning, God says, “I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live.” (Ezekiel 33:11)

This morning another wicked man is in hell. His death does nothing to reverse the horrible fate of the 3,000 people he murdered on September 11, 2001.

Only once in history has the death of one man reversed the horrible fate of others. That man was Jesus Christ. He – the Son of God – died on the cross because God loves all the world. Jesus died for you, for me, and for Osama bin Laden.

Let’s be thankful that justice has been served today but be mindful of the fact that, without faith in Christ, we deserve no better fate than bin Laden.
_______________________________________________________________________________

What we so easily forget is that sin is sin.  Evil is evil.  God does not put our sin in categories.  One sin is not better than another.  ALL of it separates us from Christ.  All of it causes eternal death and hell.  We humans are the ones who have created categories to help us feel better about ourselves.  But in reality, we are all very capable of becoming just like bin Laden.  And no matter how we categorize and justify our sin - our fate is the same as well.

Today, I am thankful for a God that loved us all enough to die for us.  I am thankful for His grace, His mercy, His unconditional love.  This same love, and grace, and mercy is available to ALL - even to the Osama bin Laden's of this world.  Had he repented and accepted Christ as his Savior, he too could have had a different fate.  In that regard, I am sad for him.

Easter - Jesus is Alive and Working!

Sunday was such an exciting day!  I always love celebrating the resurrection of our Lord.  Spring is here - new life begins and we remember the fact that God is all knowing, all powerful and full of grace.  Where would I be without that?  I don't even want to think about it.  There is absolutely nothing I could have done to earn my salvation - which is awesome because I am horrible.  And there is absolutely nothing I can do to have that salvation taken away - which is awesome because I am horrible.

I have been reminded over and over again recently just how wretched I am.  Seems the ugliness of pettiness and selfishness always seems to rear it's head.  I repent, give it to the Lord, something reminds me of it and I start all over again.  Just as frustrated as before - nothing changes.  The more I pray about it, the more frustrated I become.

Emotions are strong and often deceiving.  They are not wrong, but our response to them can be. So many times we act on the emotions before figuring out where they are coming from.  We fail to peel back the layers to find out the root cause of an emotion.  I've come to find over the years that my emotions are like an onion.  Layers and layers and layers.  They build on each other over the years and then finally something scratches it just right and yuck!  Emotional vomit!  It all comes out - tears, anger, frustration, jealousy, pettiness, selfishness - just plain yuck!  All those things we try to conceal behind our thick outer skin.  It's so easy to just look at the immediate thing that caused the explosion instead of peeling back each layer to get to the root issue.  So often the thing that causes us to finally react - is not the true problem.

This has been a hard lesson over the years. But I do try to evaluate myself before I react to something.  It's never easy and often it means holding a mirror up and my NOT liking what I see.  But most times, if we allow it, God uses it.  God is all about relationships.  Our relationship with him - our relationship with others.  How we relate to others can be a good indication of how we relate with Him.  Now that's scary.

For the past several weeks, I have been dealing with lots of emotions.  Anger, hurt, entitlement.  I'll be honest and tell you that it had to do with stuff.  Some of my moms stuff!  Stuff that will eventually burn in a land fill.  Stuff that by itself means nothing.  Attach to it that it was my mother's and man - it's been a strange roller coaster for me.  So petty - so selfish - so wrong on many levels.  But - so very emotional. There are people in Haiti and the rest of the world who have NOTHING and I'm worried about stuff.

What was it about this stuff?  I kept praying - repenting - praying some more.  Driving Russell crazy as I am one of those who has to talk out loud and hear myself as I process.  It kept coming back up - it wouldn't go away.  I was just going to leave it all alone because it was ridiculous!  It was STUFF!!!!!  But as the days and weeks went on, I felt like I needed to do something. But what?  I'm going to look like a fool.  And then, in one of my moments of talking out loud and processing - peeling back those layers - I had a break through!  It wasn't really about the stuff - it was about my relationship with a family member.  It was about me being honest with them - it was about me being heard.  It was about being real. It was about loving them enough to continue to tear down the walls that had been created. It was about allowing them to understand me.

I prayed for the opportunity to talk about it and God gave it to me.  It wasn't always pretty.  And it definitely was not easy - but more bricks on that wall were torn down.  Healing had continued.  Yes - there were tears and other difficult emotions but it took us to a new and deeper level.  One of understanding, one of empathy, one of deeper commitment to the relationship.  And you know what?  I was released from the pull of the "stuff".  It was never really my issue.  The relationship needed more healing - more tending to. Something I had avoided because it meant it would be hard.  Man - sometimes the hardest things are the most rewarding.  And yet - we get so caught up with all the surfacy "stuff".

I am so thankful that I kept processing - that I kept fighting - digging - praying.  That I didn't just react on the emotions that were causing all of this to begin with.  It was so much deeper than that.  Had I reacted the way I wanted to - it could have made things so much worse.  It could have destroyed the relationship and caused wounds that would take a long time to heal - if ever.  But, instead, I waited, I obeyed and I have been rewarded.  My relationship has moved forward and I have been set free.  From stuff.

God is so very good.  He loves me unconditionally, He forgives me and He is alive and working in my life and in my relationships.  This whole situation made my Easter even sweeter this year.  On that note, here is our day in photos.......

More Excitement

So yesterday afternoon, Jarod fell out of a neighborhood tree and bent his wrist back.  Fortunately, this time it was his right arm - as he is a lefty.  Russ and he had some great bonding time at the Urgent Care to find out that it is only sprained.  We are thankful for that but this brace is his new friend for the next several days!  It will go great with his new Easter clothes tomorrow. LOL!

Anne enjoyed another Easter Egg Hunt today at church.

Wow!  Lot's of fun stuff!

We came home and colored eggs here at the house.
Usually we do the cups and vinegar dyes but this year we tried something different.  Eye droppers!  It's so nice to be able to help them get set up and then watch them create.  They did an awesome job!

Tye Dye!  How cool is that?

Happy Easter Everyone!
Until tomorrow.........

New Glasses, Another Missing Tooth and an Easter Egg Hunt

It's funny how things go in cycles around here.  I'll go for a week or so and feel like I have nothing to blog about and then all of a sudden, I feel like I cannot keep up.  So - here goes.......

Jarod has new glasses.  Poor kid is near sighted like his parents. We have learned that when you are near-sighted, your eyesight changes Every. Single. Time. You. Grow.  He's been growing a lot in the past few months and when I took him in to get his eyes examined, he was seeing 20/100 with his old pair!  The kid couldn't see!!!!! (Talk about feeling like a horrible mother!)

The Dr. said that every time I notice him grow even a half inch - to bring him in because his eyes will change then too.  Ugh!   Anyway, Jarod picked out these stylish frames and they look great on him!  Ignore the stickers, of course.  These were the sample pair in the store.  We picked up his glasses on Monday and he's been too busy camping, spending the night with friends, going to Boy Scout meetings, etc..... for me to get another photo!  At least I can be certain that as he is doing all his fun stuff, he can see......for now.

Anne has lost her second tooth.  During Dance class, this time.  She did manage to hang on to it and bring it home.  The Tooth Fairy was so thankful that she gave her a little extra this time!

As you can see from this photo, her permanent teeth are already coming in.  She has a cute little lisp right now but it won't be for long.  I don't think there are any other loose ones to speak of.

Never did see her first one - but I wasn't planning on keeping an eye open for it!  LOL!

Anne had a busy week.  The Zoo on Wednesday and an Easter Egg Hunt at school on Thursday.  This is one of three she will have this year!

 Getting lined up to hunt!

72 students x 8 eggs each = 576 scattered eggs to be hunted!

 And they're off!

It didn't take Anne long to collect her 8 eggs.

 Checking it all out

Tomorrow we will hunt eggs at the church and then the kids will do it again at Nana's on Sunday afternoon.

I pray that everyone has a wonderful Easter Weekend as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord!
Happy Easter!!!!
