The Journey of a Cereal Box

Today has been an ApParent Project day!  It started with a meeting at 7:30 at the Elementary School.  I was able to meet with the Principal and introduce her to AP and to the Fund Raiser Bracelets.  Before I left, she had purchased jewelry and set up 3 different dates for me to sell between now and December.  Exciting stuff!

I then met Russell at the house and we headed to the church to take care of a few things.  But first we decided to stop in to a local Artisan Shop in Green Cove that had been advertising Haitian art.  After a long chat with the owner, I left several pieces with her to see how they will do in her shop.  VERY excited about the possibilities!!!!  People are always asking me if they can get jewelry anywhere except from me.  I point them to the online store, but now there may be a local shop where they can run in a pick up a few items if needed.  How cool is that?

Finally we drove over to the church to pick up the 17 boxes of cereal boxes that were ready for shipment.  Russ loaded them into the van and off we went!  I don't know about Russ (he's always a bit out of breath from lifting 500 + pounds of boxes) but I always feel a great sense of accomplishment when we walk out of the Post Office.  Like a big task is finished.  For now.  Fortunately the boxes just keep on coming.  And each Wednesday night you will find me in the Ministry Room at church packing more boxes.

I thought I would give you a photographic journey of our cereal boxes........

Often, I have helpers.  We sort the boxes, picking out the ones that are the right size and thickness, and organize them into shipping boxes.

After only 4 - 6 weeks, I wind up with a stack that looks like this!  17 boxes of boxes ready to go!  525 POUNDS of cardboard.  I get so excited!!!!

After I follow all of my own instructions here, Russ helps me load them up to take them to the Post Office.  I am still looking for a cheaper and easier way to get them to Rays of Hope, but right now the Post Office is it.
Loading up my van.

This is so exciting!!!!!

Arriving at the Post Office

We do call before we come so as to not overwhelm these poor people too much!

Next week - they will arrive in Grand Rapids, MI at Rays of Hope to be loaded on a Sea Container.
And after about a month, they arrive in Port Au Prince, Haiti.

I took this photo from the plane when I was landing in Haiti back in February.

When they FINALLY arrive at ApParent Project, it's like Christmas!

They are in constant need of cereal boxes.  They go through them about as fast as they come in.

Cereal boxes mean jobs for these artisans.  They have every right to be thrilled.

They spend time sorting everything by size and color.  They wind up with just as much of a mess as I have in the beginning!  Ha!

On Wednesdays, artisans come in and select their boxes.
Then they find a paper cutter and a place to cut!

Once the triangular strips are cut, they begin rolling the cereal boxes into beads, covering them in a glue that will dry clear.

After the first coat of glue dries, they go outside and put a layer of varnish to seal them and give them a nice shine.

How Beautiful!?!

Once dried and separated, they are ready to be made into jewelry.
This is Rose and one of her 7 children.  She is receiving instructions from Shelley.

An Artisan that works at ApParent Project makes at least three times the minimum wage in Haiti.
Enough to feed, clothe, shelter, educate and most importantly, KEEP their children.  There are now about 250 Haitians on Payroll - now that's progress.

They work hard each and every day to make beautiful pieces of art for us to wear. And each time we wear it, it's beauty draws attention and we can tell their story.  What a privilege.

Someone asked me recently if I ever get tired of sorting and packing cereal boxes.  The answer was immediate.  NO.  Each time I sit and pack a box, measure everything out, get it ready to go - I don't just see a stack of cardboard.  I see the faces of these beautiful people, their children, their houses.  I see the gorgeous piece of jewelry that each one will become and the jobs that they are creating.

Each time I leave the Post Office, I see the journey they will take and the lives they will change.

I am once again humbled and honored to be a part of it all.

Until next time.......

The Boxes Have Arrived!!!!

I am so busy with Calligraphy right now that it is NOT even funny. But I received an email a few minutes ago and simply had to share!

Last December, our church began collecting cereal/cracker boxes to ship to ApParent Project in Haiti.  We began shipping them to Rays of Hope in Michigan.

They collected the boxes each month and then these lovely people -

Packed our boxes - along with a bunch of other really cool stuff - in a Sea Container to take to Haiti.
Don't you just want to hug these guys?

That was in April.  It takes a month for the ship to get to Haiti from Michigan and then the container has to sit in Customs for another month.  How frustrating for Shelley - knowing everything is just down the road.  Sitting.

But then it finally happens - They get our stuff!!!!

Can you see it in the corner - that's our return address!    Shelley sent these pics to me this evening.

These are ours too!  Rays of Hope called me when they were packing the container and said that some of the shipping boxes were damaged and would not make the trip on the Sea Container.  So - they found an old filing cabinet, thinking that Shelley could use that as well, and stuffed it full of our boxes!  How cool is that?

So, Anyway - our boxes have arrived!!!! And they are BUSY! BUSY! BUSY!!!

I love this one - her smile is priceless.  I have to say that I sat and wept at these photos!  We are helping!!!  We are making a difference.  How awesome is that?

I know that there are more of our boxes in Michigan waiting for the next Sea Container - if they haven't left already - and I just mailed off about 500 more this past week.  Thanks again to everyone who has helped!  I'm just speechless.

Cereal Boxes - Shipping Details

Many of you are asking about the details for shipping the cereal boxes to The ApParent Project in Haiti.  It takes a little extra effort - but it's easy.  Thanks to a wonderful Sea Container Ministry out of Grand Rapids, Michigan called Rays of Hope for Haiti.

First of all, go through all of your collected cereal boxes.  Make sure that they are all flattened out and that they are all 8 inches or larger.  Also, mind the thickness.  You don't want the cardboard to be too stiff.  Remember, the artisans need  to be able to roll it into a bead.

Next, find a shipping box a little larger than your cereal boxes and start stacking them inside.  This is where your Tetris skills come in handy.  Pack as many boxes into it as possible, filling all the space - without bending the boxes.  I just kept stacking and pressing down.  When I was finished, I had to squeeze the box together with my legs in order to tape it shut!

Go to Rays of Hope for Haiti and click on the "Shipping" tab.  Then click "Shipping Forms".  Down at the bottom is a link for Sea Container Ministry Packet.  Go ahead and print that out.  It will have all your needed info.  You must fill out the Contact Information Sheet and the Manifest Packing List.  You also need to print off the Shipping Labels and fill those out.

Your Receiving Organization Information is:

ApParent Project
13 Rue Dahlia, Delmas 75
Port Au Prince, Haiti

Contact Person:  Shelley Clay
Phone # 3194-1267
E-Mail: shelleyinhaiti@gmail.com

On the shipping labels you can just write:  Shelley Clay/ApParent Project

On the Manifest Packing List (Used for Customs)  fill in the contact name and info on top and then the description would be "empty cereal boxes"

Once you have all the paperwork filled out, measure your box.  Length x Width x Height.  Divide that by 1728 and then multiply that number by 8.

Example:  21 x 14 x 9 = 2646 divided by 1728 = 1.53   Now take 1.53 x 8 = 12.24

So this box will cost $12.24 to put on the Sea Container to Haiti.  Enclose a check made out to Rays of Hope for Haiti for $12.24 and seal your box up with all the completed paper work laying on top of your cereal boxes inside.  Then ship it to Rays of Hope for Haiti.

The address is:
Rays of Hope for Haiti
446 Grandville Ave. SW
Grand Rapids, Michigan  49503
Loading Dock #6

If you have more than one box to ship - mark the outside of the box 1 of 3, 2 of  3, 3 of 3, etc.  Just put all of your papers and one check for all the boxes in the first box.  Mark the first box "Packing List Enclosed" - that way they will know to open it and get your paperwork out.  Otherwise the box will just sit.  They do not put it on the Sea Container until they have payment.

Now, let me take a moment and explain Rays of Hope for Haiti.  This is a Sea Container Ministry which allows us to pay by cubic foot for anything going to Haiti.  Once their Sea Container is full, they put it on a ship and take it to Haiti.  Part of their ministry is taking care of all of the customs and documentation needed.  Normally, when you just ship something to Haiti, the government requires the recipient to pay $1.50 per pound to receive it.  I packed up 5 boxes and the total weight was over 130 pounds.  If I were to just send it to ApParent Project, it would cost them $200.00 to receive it!  With Rays of Hope for Haiti, those same 5 boxes are going to cost me $42.16 to put in the Sea Container and it will NOT cost anything for Shelley to receive it.  Now - it will cost me to get them to Grand Rapids, but that's going to be the same no matter where I ship in the US.

I hope that this is helpful to you.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at Franklin4@truevine.net or you can also call and talk to Rays of Hope for Haiti at (616) 633-4258.  They were very friendly and very helpful in answering all of my questions.

Thanks so much!  I can't wait to hear when Shelley begins to receive all these shipments!  I pray that they are blown away!!!!
