The Birthday Continues......

Since Thursday was Jarod's Birthday, we continued the celebration through the end of the week.  I thought I would share his turning 12 with you in photos.

The cupcakes were a huge hit at school and when he returned on Thursday evening, we had his favorite dinner, chicken enchiladas.  Afterwards, he opened his presents.....

These are posters we found at the Scout Store.  We had them mounted so he could hang them in his room.  I won't bore you with photos of all the presents - but this was kind of a "Scout" birthday.  He received a new belt for his uniform, along with his sash to hold all of his merrit badges.  We also found a nice book cover for his Scout Book.  Sasha bought him the Lego Pirates of the Caribbean Wii game.  Very cool!  He was very excited about that!  Thanks Sasha!

On Friday night, we went to The Red Elephant for dinner!  This is always a special treat.  For those of you in Jacksonville who have never been - it's a must!!!!  It's off of San Jose Blvd.  Go north and it's on the right - before the Loop.  To give you an idea - it's similar to a Loop x 100!  AWESOME!!!!

Side note:  I changed the batteries in my camera before we left the house.  When we arrived at Red Elephant, I realized that I left it sitting on the kitchen counter!  So the following pictures are taken with my cell phone.  Not my first choice when documenting - but thankful to have it!

They brought us an "Elephant Ear" with a candle for Jarod.  I'm beginning to see a theme.
Yummy doughnut like pastry - shaped like and elephant ear - covered with cinnamon, sugar and powdered sugar.  Yummmmm.

We played 2 rounds of 18 holes and had a blast!  I will would say that I won both games, but that just wouldn't be nice.

After golf, we headed to Brewsters for ice cream and then came home and crashed!  It was a great family night!

Saturday was another day of celebrating!  Nana and Papa came over.  Along with Marc, Sam & Chloe.  We grilled and had a special time hanging out and once again honoring Jarod.  Marc helped hang the cool guitar over Jarod's bed in his room.  Thanks Uncle Marc!

Jarod received some new shirts, some cash, a gift card to Academy, a cool book on Myths and Legends from Uncle Ray and the "Through My Eyes" biography by Tim Tebow.  He hasn't put it down since!  Great call Nana!

Milestones - A One Year Anniversary

Not only is it Jarod's Birthday today, but this week also marks another huge milestone in my life.  As if being the mother of a 12 year old isn't enough.

I was recently reading one of my favorite blogs and came across the authors feelings about dogs and was thrilled that she described my feelings to a tee.  Although I had never thought of this issue so directly, I completely and totally related to her.  100%  She has a way of just putting it so perfectly....... 

"Anyone who knows me knows this:  I am not a dog person.

Call me crazy but I'm not a fan of things licking me or of exposed private parts.  Dogs have those.  I won't lie.  It makes me cringe to know that dogs put their exposed hiney holes all over the floor.  If someone came over to your house, licked you, opened up their butt cheeks, set their butt hole on your floor...or worse...your couch...and then this person humped your leg, I'm thinking their bizarre behavior would be a show stopper, a story you told over and over, and your guest would never be allowed back at your house.


The rules are obviously different for dogs.


Add two legs, some fur, some slobber, and suddenly this barbaric house guest becomes a beloved pet.

Now, oddly enough - I have felt like this for most indoor animals my entire adult life.  They are just gross.  They leave their fur everywhere - they are an extra thing to clean up after and why would I want to spend my money on food and vet bills for this creature that just causes more work?  I think I could ask that same question of my children sometimes but I guess that would just be wrong.

Anyway - if you clicked through and read the rest of Heather's post, you will see that she too has had a change of heart this year.  Such milestones for us!

Of course you already know where I am going with this.

This week we celebrate that one year ago this little girl
Came into my life and changed it forever!  Yes - it was one year ago that she began to look at us through our back door every morning.  As much as I protested - and said it would NEVER happen - within a week, she was spayed, vaccinated and living in our house.  How could I resist that face?

Now she is part of the family.  She leaves her fur everywhere, (even a few times in hairball form - Russ had the wonderful opportunity of stepping on that one morning recently.  I have not yet had the pleasure) She licks herself and yes - she has an exposed hiney hole.  So, I vacuum a little more often - and try not to think about the hiney hole - so what's the big deal?

She sleeps with us on our bed and has become the screen saver on my smart phone.  We pay for food and vet bills and even pay our neighbor to come feed her and play with her when we are out of town.  She has become a Franklin.  She really has absolutely NO clue as to how very lucky she is!  She has made it a year - she'll be here forever!

TWELVE!!!

Yes - I said 12!  Amazing!  Tomorrow, Jarod will turn 12.  Well, actually tonight at 12:05 to be exact.

At this time (7:15 pm) 12 years ago, Russ was making me walk around our front yard in Alabama.  I was NOT happy with him.  I felt fine and did not see the need.  Besides it was hot and muggy outside and I was getting all sticky. I came inside to shower and shortly thereafter we were driving to the hospital.  Jarod arrived in under 5 hours. 

He's been a huge joy in our life ever since.

He asked me to make cupcakes to take to school tomorrow.  So, I worked on that this afternoon.

I think they turned out pretty nice.

He thinks so too!
LOVE the idea of asking Winn-Dixie for the cupcake containers!  Thanks Sam!!!!  Now I know that he can get them there safely.

He's requested chicken enchiladas for dinner tomorrow and on Friday we are going to Red Elephant for dinner and then to play Putt-Putt as a family.  The rest of the family comes over Saturday to grill and have another new dessert - Milky Way Cake. We'll let you know how that goes.  Goodness - you would think it was his birthday or something!  More like a birth-week!  That's fine - you only turn 12 once!  

12TwelveTWELVE?  1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-TWELVE!!!!!!  Amazing!  I'm not ready to have a child who is 12. 

You know why? 
Because it's only 365 days until THIRTEEN!!!!!!

The Power of Words

We receive Focus on the Family's Thriving Family magazine in the mail.  I love this magazine and often read it from cover to cover.  It has practical, Godly applications for marriage and raising children.  I especially love the way it divides their articles up by the age of your children.  For me, how I approach Jarod about something can often times be completely different than how I approach Anne.  Age difference, gender difference and even personality differences come in to play.  That's obvious.  But the practical application is often where I get hung up.  Especially as they grow up and change.

One article that caught my attention recently was in their summer issue.  Dr. John Trent wrote about "The Gift of Blessing"

"As a counselor, I often see the benefits and the heartbreaking results of parental choices.  Sometimes it's as if I hear the cry that Esau made when he found out his brother, Jacob, had taken his father's blessing: "Esau said to his father, 'Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too my father!' Then Esau wept aloud" (Genesis 27:38).

Esau's desperate plea for his father's approval can be heard in families today.  Kids thirst for parental acceptance - they long for their mother and father to reinforce their worth.

Meeting your children's need for affirmation doesn't have to be difficult.  One way is to do what I call "the blessing."  This blessing has five distinct elements to build up your sons and daughters and help them understand their worth in your family and before God.  Those five elements are:
  • Appropriate and meaningful touch
  • Words of love and acceptance
  • Value placed on the child
  • Acknowledgement of a special future 
  • genuine commitment"
Dr. Trent went on to give practical ways of doing these things within each age group.  When I finished reading it, I prayed that the Lord would show me ways that I could be more deliberate in "blessing" Jarod and Anne.  Sometimes I feel like all I do is discipline and correct.  Do they ever hear positive things from me?  Hmmmmm.

Well, the weeks went on and this article was forgotten about.  At least by me.  God NEVER forgets our prayers and continues to work and answer them long after we have put them out of our minds.  Little did I know that he was still working in my heart and putting ideas and "blessings" for my children into my head.

School started and Jarod came home wanting to talk about something that had happened one day.  Russ and I sat and listened to him tell of the events and how he handled the situation.  I have to admit, I somewhat expected to be disappointed in the way he handled it - or at least bring up ways that he could have done better.  But, I was so proud!  He had done exactly what we had told him to do in this type of situation.  He handled it with strength and maturity.  I was so excited!  He really does hear us!  It led to great conversation and us being able to praise him and his efforts!  I LOVE moments like these!  They feel so rare right now.

A few days later, while shopping, I decided to pick out a few cards for a friend.  While there I got the idea to give Jarod a card and tell him how proud I was of how he handled his situation at school.  Then I decided that I had better get Anne one too because - well - if you have more than one child - you get it.  One will come home, find the card, make a big deal about it - the other one won't have one, etc.....  So - I pick one out for Anne also.  I bring them home and fill them out and put them on their beds to find when they get home from school.

They came home, the day went on and nothing was said about either of them.  That night, when I was putting Anne to bed, I found her card, opened and on her dresser.  I said, "Oh!  You found your card!  Did you like it?"  She said, "I don't know - I didn't read it".  Ugh!  I think she just opened it looking for money.  :-)

I asked her if she would like me to read it with her and she agreed.  Now, let me pause here for a moment and say that Anne is reading up a storm right now.  She is devouring words and is so excited to be reading on her own.  That's why I was kind of surprised when she didn't read it.  So, I sat on her bed and asked her to read it to me.

This is what it said:


Anne read it to me without a problem. Well, she need help on the word smooshed - but who wouldn't?  Anyway, she couldn't make it through the last sentence - she was crying!  (She is so going to be like me!)  She grabbed me and hugged me and just cried.  I asked her what was wrong and she said, "That was just so nice, mom.  I love you too!"

We, of course, continued our "moment".  I tucked her in bed and pointed out that she had read that all by herself - with no help.  Any card up until now that she has received for her birthday or in the mail, we have had to read to her.  But this time she read it by herself.  I told her how proud I was of her and how much I loved her.  But as I left the room, something stuck with me......

Why had that affected her so deeply?  I had set out to bless Jarod but it seemed as if she needed it more in that moment.  I really only got a card for her too because I was trying to stop an argument.  I guess God had bigger plans!  Now I will say that Jarod did thank me for his - in his almost 12 year old boy kind of way. So I know that it did mean something to him as well.  But this really affected Anne.

Over the last week, while I've been contemplating all of this, the above mentioned article and my prayer came back to mind.  One of my Spiritual Gifts is Encouragement.  I don't seem to have a problem speaking words of encouragement to my friends, to my husband - but what about my children?  Had I not been giving Anne enough?  Was she starved for it by the time she read my card? 

She had had a rough week of adjusting to a new school year. 

She is a girl and sometimes we are just more emotional than even we want to be.

I do express myself in writing easier and more accurately than speaking sometimes.  I think it's because you can delete and start over if it doesn't sound right. 

Whatever the reason, it was exactly what she needed - when she needed it.  That was an answer to my prayer.  I had encouraged and blessed my Anne Girl.  That's all that matters.  I'm going to continue to look for ways to "bless" my kids.  Continue to listen to that still, small voice of God and be obedient so that I can be an encouragement to them and to others.  In the meantime, Anne and I are both going to continue to learn about the power of words........

Court of Honor and Chloe's 2nd Birthday Bash

What a busy week!  Jarod had another Court of Honor for Boy Scouts last Monday night.  The Troop earned so many merrit badges and new ranks because of their Summer Camp that it was time to honor their efforts again.  Jarod has worked very hard and has already made 2nd Class!

We are thoroughly enjoying the change from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts.  So much more responsibility for Jarod and we really see him stepping up to the challenge.

That was Monday, which also happened to be Chloe's 2nd Birthday.  Can't believe that's possible - but it is.  To celebrate, we took off to St. Augustine Beach with Marc and Sam on Saturday.  Marc was painting the inside of a Beach House and the owners said he could stay there a few days while he worked.  So we joined them on Saturday for the celebration!

 What a cutie!!!!  Sam did a great job with the cupcakes.

Chloe LOVES The Muppet Show.  Go figure, right?  Since both parents like puppets as well.  When we were down in Orlando, we found this cute Miss Piggy doll and I knew it would be PERFECT!  I was right!  She LOVES it!  She was even making it do Karate chops!  How fun is that?  Hi - ya!

So after all the fun with cake and presents, we took off to the beach.  Earlier in the week, we were not sure what kind of weather we would have because of Hurricane Irene.  We were very fortunate.  Our Saturday brought lots of sun and wonderful waves!

 As you can see - we had incredible waves.  They made me nervous at first - the kids are not used to this kind of surf.  But, rest assured - they were not out there without an adult with them and the never got in over their waste.  Feel better?  I prayed a lot! They had a BLAST!
 Anne is so light - she kept riding them ALL the way in!  She is still learning to steer so I won't tell you how many people she mowed over!

Generosity

This week I have come face to face with generosity. The Bible has several things to say about being generous.
"The righteous are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed." Psalm 37:26

"Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely" Psalm 112:5

"One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Proverbs 11:24-25

"A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor." Proverbs 22:9
 
There are others as well but you get the point.  So what is being generous - or generosity?  I had my ideas this week and found myself to be wrong.  Here's what the dictionary says:
 
Websters Defines Generosity as:
a : the quality or fact of being generous 
b : a generous act
: abundance generosity of spirit>
 
So - I looked up Generous:
a : characterized by a noble or forbearing spirit : magnanimous, kindly 
b : liberal in giving : openhanded
 
Oddly enough - that didn't really help me.  Generous.  Generous with what?  My money?  My time?  My possessions?  
 
At what cost?  Or is that even supposed to be a thought? I don't think it is.

I could tell you story after story of how people have been generous towards us.  Especially when we were caring for my mom or when we were raising support.  Even now we will receive gift cards for gas or a night out.  We are always overwhelmed and completely blessed by them.  

When I think of generosity - a particular family comes to mind.  Over the years, they have gone above and beyond in giving their time, their money and their resources to bless us.  

Actually as I sit here prayerfully thinking about this, God is recalling several people who have gone above and beyond in their generosity towards us.  Bringing meals when mom was sick, sitting with her so I could go to Bible Study, giving us money to stay at a hotel for a few nights away, people showing up at my house with groceries. Bags full of items I would have never bought because it was not in our budget.  Even now, every once in a while, we have a gas card show up in our mail anonymously!  Having to drive back and forth to the beach so often - that is always a huge blessing!  We have different friends who own lovely properties and allow us "get aways".  The list goes on.

All of these, at the time they are given, are HUGE to us.  I always go back to Ephesians 3:20, that "God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or imagine."  All of these things fall into that category for me.  God's generosity to us through others here on earth.

But what about me?  What can I do?  I don't own condos.  I don't always have the kind of budget that allows me to show up with $200.00 worth of groceries for someone.  

Back when my mother was sick and we were raising support, God did incredible things through people.  I came out of that wanting to be like them.  I really learned so much about giving.  Or did I? I prayed that one day God would allow me to be generous to someone like they were to us.  That I could have the opportunity to experience blessing others.

Being on the other side of that now, I often wonder what exactly that looks like.  So I go back to my original question - What is generosity?

This week I came face to face with a family in need.  The husband has lost his job. Things have continued to spiral downward for them.  I won't go into details but you can imagine the financial situation they find themselves in.  There are many people like that right now here in America.  Please know that they are friends of ours.  They are lovely people who are just in a bad spot right now.  But this is not about them.  My goal here is not to publicize their personal problems but to explain what I learned from them this week. 

Let's back up a bit.  When we were on staff with Crusade and raising our support - it was tough.  We relied specifically on people donating to our ministry.  If they did not give that month - we did not get a paycheck.  That simple.  There were 3 different months in a row where we did not receive paychecks.  God taught us something different each time. 
 
The first month - he taught us to wait on him. Not to try and fix it on our own - to just wait.  Hard lesson.  But, in the nick of time - we received a check in the mail for $1000.00.  Awesome!  
 
The second month, he taught us humility.  He gave Russ a specific person that he was supposed to go to and ask for help.  Wow!  Russ struggled with that one.  He went to a man, who we didn't know very well at all - a prominent business man - and had to tell him that we didn't have rent and ask for his help.  Russ felt like a failure - like he couldn't support his own family.  The man had mercy on us and gave generously to us and we were able to pay our rent.  Again, we learned humility and that ultimately God is our provider - not Russell.

By this time I figured the lessons would be over.  Right?  Let us rest Lord!  But no.  There was one more and it was for me.  The first of the month rolled around again and we had nothing.  Barely enough food to get through the week and this time God was silent.  I kept wondering what we did wrong.  Did we make a mistake?  Was God punishing us for something?  (I learned here that God DOES NOT work like that - but crazy things go through your head while you are trying to figure all this out.)

Anyway - it had gotten so late that I knew I had to call our Property Manager.  I so did not want to make that call.  We had built a relationship with her - she was a new Christian. She knew we were missionaries - raising support.  I felt like calling her was saying, "Our God couldn't provide."  It was HUGE to me.  But time ran out and I made the call.  She was quiet with me on the phone.  Asked a few questions about when we thought we might have it - did we have food, etc.  I answered them all honestly and hung up.

The next day she showed up at our house with bags of groceries and an envelope full of cash and gift cards she had collected from her co-workers.  I was floored!  I thanked her profusely and she assured me that the owner of the house was willing to work with us and all was okay.  I told her how I didn't want to make that phone call and she understood.  She was beaming and she actually thanked me.  I was baffled but she finally said, "I'm a new Christian and I don't know much about the Bible yet.  But I didn't think that God could use me.  Thank you for this opportunity because now I know He can."

She left and I sobbed!  God spoke very clearly to me and said, "See, Cami, sometimes it's not about you and what you do right or wrong.  I allow these situations for the people around you."  Wow! This lesson wasn't about us at all!  It was for her!  She left our house with a new confidence in Christ.  I was thankful that God allowed us to be used in that way.

So - with that knowledge - let's get back to this week.  I came face to face with a family in need.  I've had a variety of emotions over this.  I want to be generous - I want to help.  But I don't have the resources - we just came home from vacation.  Vacation - now I feel guilty.  Going on vacation, eating out, spending money on frivolous things when others don't have enough.  And because I just went on vacation, I have less than I normally would right now.  

I want desperately to go out and spend $200 on groceries and fill their pantry for the week!  I want to be able to give them money to get what they need.  I want to go over and above.  Not because I wanted recognition or anything - I just honestly wanted to help!  Wanted to fix it for them.  But I can't. 
 
Enter opposite extreme (I do that). 
 
"I guess if I can't do this big - then I won't do anything.  It's not enough - it won't make a difference - they will just laugh at what I offer because their need is so big."  Wow - Satan is such a liar!  He so likes to get in our heads!

I began praying about this - I call a friend because in cases like these she can straighten me out.  She reminds me of my stories above.  She reminds me of my emotions when someone gives to us whether it be big or small.  She gives me some other creative ways to help because at the time my head is so jumbled up I can't think straight.  I love her for that!  
 
Anyway......
Because so much has been given to me by others, I always thought that when I prayed and asked God to make me generous, it meant that I would have lots of resources to give.  People who give lots have lots. Right?  Wrong.  I was reminded this week that it is all relative.  When you are on the receiving end - it doesn't matter.  You are thankful for anything.  I allowed the lies to paralyze me for a bit - thankfully not for long though.

I won't go into details on what I did for them this week.  That's not the point.  It didn't feel like much to me - but it was HUGE to them.  Seeing their faces and experiencing their thankfulness and relief was enough. It really is all about obedience.  When God calls you to do something big - you trust him.  When he calls you to do something that you think is small - you trust him. Because ultimately - it's not about you at all - it's about Him.  God sees the resources I am giving from.  He knows our own needs for the week as well and He is perfectly capable of taking care of all of it.  And what you think is small might be HUGE to someone else.

So what is generosity?  It's being obedient with what you have.  It's seeking God when you see a need and asking Him what you can do and then doing it - no matter how big or small.  It's trusting Him with the outcome.  How can it be too big or too little if it's what He's asked you to do?  It will be perfect.

I don't know why my friends are in this situation right now.  But I know this - God has a purpose.  Just like our desperate situation was for our Property Manager, this week the purpose was for me.  

Oh How God loves us!  I am so thankful that He is not finished with me and always has some lesson around the corner.
